Do Baby Teeth Need Fillings?

People of all ages, from toddlers to adults, could develop cavities, which eventually threaten a smile’s comfort and stability. But what about children with baby teeth? Often, parents ask if these teeth truly need treatment, after all, they’re just going to fall out, right? In today’s blog, we’re explaining to parents in El Paso, TX, why even baby teeth need fillings!

The Dangers of Tooth Decay (For All Ages)

Typically, an outer layer of strong tooth enamel protects teeth from cavities. However, should the outer enamel become weakened due to poor oral hygiene or injury, then harmful bacteria could reach the inner layers of dentin, which is sensitive and porous. As a result, a cavity forms. Tooth decay will continue to grow and spread over time, eventually enabling bacteria to reach the tooth’s inner pulp, the nerve center responsible for the flow of blood and nutrients to and from the tooth. An infection then forms, which could threaten the stability of the tooth and cause severe discomfort. For children, an infection could mean premature loss of a baby tooth, which impacts how the permanent teeth erupt and could lead to misalignment and other complications.

Biocompatible Dental Fillings

When your child complains about a toothache, bring him or her to our office. We will perform an exam and if we identify tooth decay, we will offer treatment to prevent infection or premature tooth loss. Remember, the baby tooth with decay could take months or even years to fall out on its own, plenty of time for an infection to arise unless treated quickly. We will remove the decay from the tooth and then thoroughly clean it. We next prepare the composite resin material, which is metal-free and able to be shaded to match the tooth. We apply the material to the tooth and as it cures under a light, we will sculpt the tooth. The final step involves polishing the restoration to ensure a more natural appearance!

Preventing Tooth Decay

To help your family stay cavity-free, consider cutting back on sugary foods and drinks. Instead, enjoy more water, fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and cheeses, or sugar-free gum. Make time to brush teeth for two minutes when waking up and again before bed, and always floss thoroughly before going to sleep. Every six months you and your children should have your teeth examined and cleaned as well!
