Our last blog focused on brushing our teeth, from picking the right toothbrush to how often. But you don’t need to just brush your teeth, you also need to clean where your toothbrush’s bristles cannot reach. In today’s blog, your El Paso, TX, dentists will talk about flossing and how this simple routine can help prevent gum disease.
Why Do We Floss?
When we eat, bits of food could become trapped between the teeth or along the gum line. Even if we brush our teeth twice a day for two minutes as recommended, this could fail to reach these trapped particles. As bacteria break down these particles, they increase oral acidity and coat the teeth in plaque buildup, which weakens and erodes enamel and increases the risk of tooth decay. The buildup also inflames gum tissue, boosting the risk of issues like gingivitis or even gum disease. We floss to help protect the health of our teeth and gums, and ensure whole, stable smiles for years to come.
Should Kids Floss Too?
Yes! As soon as your child has teeth sitting side-by-side, they need to clean in between them. For little ones, we suggest a floss pick, as this is easier for you to use when you assist them, and easier for them to use as their motor skills improve. Later, they can upgrade to the tape that you use to clean in between your teeth. Kids, like adults, need to floss every night before they go to bed.
Daily Habits for Better Oral Health
Take an 18-inch piece of floss, wrapping each end around your index fingers and holding it taut with your thumbs. Run the tape up and down each side of every tooth, dipping below the gum line briefly in a “c” motion. These actions help remove all trapped particles. Do this every night before bed, however, if you can excuse yourself to clean between teeth after meals this could be even more beneficial. Don’t forget to brush your teeth when you wake up and again before bed as well. These actions help protect smiles of all ages from serious oral health issues, safeguarding your teeth until we can see you for a checkup and cleaning appointment again.
