A dental filling is a treatment option we use to address tooth decay. Not only does this stop the discomfort related to a cavity, but our composite resin fillings can offer a natural appearance. In today’s blog, Sunny Smiles talks about when you need a filling and how we place them!
The Causes and Warning Signs of Tooth Decay
Cavities form when certain oral bacteria make contact with the dentin, the sensitive structure that makes up most of your tooth. The protective outer enamel usually prevents this exposure from happening, but the enamel could be weakened by poor oral hygiene habits, or possibly injury to teeth grinding. The decay then forms, and will grow and spread unless treated, leading to eventual infection. If you encounter tooth sensitivity when you eat or drink, or a toothache that doesn’t abate after a day, then you should let us know. These are common warning signs of a cavity, and signs that you need a filling.
Treatment with a Restoration
Our team will use digital x-rays to obtain clear and detailed images of your tooth. We then assess the position and severity of your decay. Our team will numb your tooth so you’re comfortable as we remove all decay and clean your tooth. We then prepare and apply the filling material, a metal-free composite resin. We shade this to blend with your tooth. We then sculpt and mold the tooth as we cure the composite resin beneath a special light. The last step is to polish the tooth thoroughly. This ensures a brighter appearance and also limits the ability of plaque and tartar to adhere to the teeth.
Avoiding Future Cavities
With a few simple changes to your oral hygiene routine, you can lower the risk of future cavities. Our team recommends brushing for two minutes twice a day, and using a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your enamel. You should floss each evening as well, and try to cut back on foods and drinks high in sugar and starch. Be sure you see us for checkups and cleanings too! We can watch for the earliest signs of decay, providing care before you experience pain, and also clean the teeth to lower the risk of cavities forming.
