When you or your children approach adulthood, this could mean new teeth arrive. These new molars, known as wisdom teeth, arrive in the rear of your mouth and for many, these could cause negative changes to your smile’s alignment and appearance. But Sunny Smiles can help by extracting your wisdom teeth before they erupt!
What Happens When Wisdom Teeth Erupt?
Often, there simply isn’t room for them, and the arrival of these additional teeth could cause a painful partial eruption known as an impaction. This also changes the alignment of the smile, increasing the risk of negative changes to the smile’s appearance, as well as tooth decay and gum disease. The changes to bite balance could also lead to TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). Wisdom tooth eruption is also linked to infection and damaged teeth. Our team wants to help prevent these complications by extracting the teeth before they even erupt.
Planning Your Tooth Extraction
First, we will take detailed digital x-ray images of your smile so we can assess the position of these teeth and plan the extraction to avoid sinus cavities, blood vessels, and nerve tissues. When the treatment time arrives, we will administer a local anesthetic to the area being treated and also dental sedation. The sedation option we choose will be based on your age, weight, medical history, and anxiety levels, and will help you enter a calm and relaxed state during treatment. Our team then opens the gums above the teeth and gently extracts the teeth in question, before suturing the area closed.
We will send you home with detailed aftercare instructions and prescriptions for necessary medications to ensure a complication-free healing period. We will remove sutures in a follow up visit. For the first day rot wo, eat only soft foods, be very gentle when bridge and flossing, and take medications as prescribed. Avoid prodding the site with your tongue, and don’t use straws. These actions help you stay comfortable as the area heals, and most people return to normal activities after only a day or two.
