Make and stick to a schedule.
Humans are creatures of habit. By adhering to a routine of going to bed and rising at the same times every day, you can help your body learn to recognize when it’s time to sleep and wind down easier. If you remain awake for 15-20 minutes after lying down, then get up and do something relaxing, like reading a book in low light or listening to soft music.
Don’t go to bed hungry or stuffed; if your stomach is uncomfortable, you’ll have a more difficult time trying to fall asleep. Also, refrain from drinking beverages before going to bed to avoid having to wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom.
If you work in an office, or are sedentary for most of your day, make an extra effort to incorporate physical activity into your down time. Regular exercise, yoga, walking, bicycling, and other activities can help your body burn energy and release endorphins to help you relax. However, refrain from working out one to two hours before bed to give your body enough time to wind down.
