As people approach adulthood, they could have up to four new molars erupt. Known as wisdom teeth, or third molars, these could lead to major complications with the health and functions of your smile. In today’s blog, your El Paso, TX, dentists talk about how we gently remove wisdom teeth with a tooth extraction.
The Potential Impact of Wisdom Teeth
In our late teens and early 20s, up to four new molars could erupt in the back of our mouth. This could cause a painful partial eruption known as impaction, due to lack of room, and also lead to dental misalignment. Infection is also a complication. These could lead to major changes with the health, beauty, and function of your smile. To avoid these complications, you or your child may need to have these teeth removed before they even arrive. If you’re in this age bracket or have a child who is, consider attending routine checkups and cleanings every six months, so we can keep an eye on your third molars and see if extraction is necessary.
Planning Your Treatment
We will plan the extraction of your wisdom teeth with precision and accuracy using digital x-rays to identify their exact position. We then plan the removal to avoid any sinus cavities or nerve tissues. To ensure the procedure is a comfortable one, our team will administer a local anesthetic to the area where we will be removing the teeth. We also have dental sedation, which helps people enter a calm and relaxed state with little to no memory of the procedure at all, but still conscious enough to respond to the dentist as needed.
Extracting Your Teeth
Once you’re comfortable, we will open the gums above these teeth and then extract the wisdom teeth with a pair of forceps. We then suture the area closed. A friend or family member will need to take you home, as sedation takes time to wear off. For the next day or two, you need to rest and avoid poking or prodding the site with your tongue. You also need to avoid straws, and brush and floss gently. Clots need to form to aid in the healing process. The sutures can be removed in a follow up visit.
